Paintings & Frame
Conservation Services
We specialise in the conservation of paintings and frames to professional standards. Our work respects the originality of each piece, restoring it in accordance with the artists intentions and preserving it for the future.
Paintings Conservation
Each painting is treated carefully and with an approach that prioritises stability, longevity and respect for the original work. All conservation follows the ethical standards set by institutions such as Icon (the Institute of Conservation). We begin with a thorough condition assessment, then recommend specific treatments. This may include surface cleaning, varnish reduction or removal, securing flaking paint, stabilising tears, and careful retouching to reintegrate losses and restore visual unity.
Frame Conservation
Gilded frames play an important role in protecting the artwork and shaping how it is presented. We begin with a close condition assessment, then carry out careful cleaning, stabilisation where needed, and sensitive repairs to strengthen weak areas and restore visual unity. Gilded finishes can be conserved and retouched, including water gilding and oil gilding where appropriate. Where ornament is chipped, cracked or missing, decorative elements can be rebuilt using suitable materials such as wood, composition ornament or plaster, depending on the frame, and then water or oil gilded to match. Where required, build-ups can be added to achieve the correct depth and spacing, including the fitting of glazing, slips, or liners for improved protection and long-term stability.
