Bespoke Framing Services
At Richardson Fine Art, we make bespoke frames to suit your artwork, your space, and your budget. Conservation and care is at the heart of everything we do. We work with private collectors, artists, galleries, and museums.
Step 1: Share your artwork
Send a few clear photos and the measurements. If possible, include details of what the artwork is on, such as canvas, panel or paper, and anything you know about it, including the medium used and size. We will review the information and arrange a discussion to confirm your budget and timescale. If you would like to proceed, we will book your design appointment.
Step 2: Design appointment
Your appointment can take place in our studio or on site at your gallery, museum or home. We will recommend the most suitable approach and confirm your choices starting with glazing (including glare reduction where appropriate), frame style, mount option and finish. We will also consider the space and environment in which the piece will be displayed.
We will assess the artwork’s condition and recommend the most appropriate level of protection.
If you are happy to proceed at this point, we can take the artwork back to our studio for framing.
Mouldings and frame styles
We carry a range of frame mouldings and can source additional options through our suppliers. At your design appointment, you can choose from our samples, or we can explore further mouldings and finishes to match the look you want.
Condition check and frame restoration
If the artwork needs attention before framing, we will let you know . We can complete a condition report about the conservation requirements of your artwork.
Frame conservation
If you have an existing frame that needs conservation or restoration, we can help. This may include resizing for a better fit, strengthening or repairing corners, re-gilding, replacing damaged sections, adding glazing, or adding a build-up to better protect your artwork.
Below is an overview of the framing styles and options we offer:
Step 3: Choosing the archival level of the frame
The right level depends on the artwork, where it will be displayed, and your budget. Your framing level also determines the materials to be used, the type of glazing and the long term protection your artwork needs.
Standard
A smart and well finished option for decorative pieces and everyday display. Ideal for typical home or office settings, with reliable materials and a good finish. Not advisable for delicate artworks or high value artworks where museum grade or conservation grade protection is required.
Conservation
Recommended for valuable, irreplaceable or sentimental work. Uses enhanced conservation grade materials, improved UV protection and other preventative measures to reduce deterioration over time.
Museum
The highest level of protection for rare, important or highly sensitive pieces. Uses premium conservation grade materials and the best glazing options available to maximise stability and long term preservation.
Step 4 — We make your frame
Once you have chosen the style and protection level a fixed quote is confirmed. This covers the frame build, mounting method, glazing, finish, and delivery or collection, so you know exactly what is included. If you have a deadline such as an installation date or an exhibition, mention it at this stage. We will confirm what is achievable and plan the schedule accordingly. Typical turnaround is about two weeks, depending on the complexity and materials.
